This is the elegant hotel by the Plaza de Armeas where I found a steady internet connection that permits me to use my own computer and do this blog. What a great opportunity. In India I had some research to do to access this kind of set up in the internet cafes of Delhi, Bombay, etc. Really I never dream of being able to do it here and ran into it by accident looking to get a trerminal to send email. The pctures here are actually from a previous visit in 2003 when i used to come here for email. Now the set up is in the courtyard and every so often the musicians come to serenade the lunching tourists. It's quite the scene. Being up against your own capacity or incapacity to use the computer is the utlimate challenge in this situation when you've broken through the technical and connective bonds and have your own ability to produce something staring you in the face.
Right next to the hotel is the little temple, El Templete, my favorite building in Havana, It was erected in the early 19th century to commemorate the three centuries of the city's founding in 1519. In the front is a ceiba tree sacred to the original inhabitants. The picture of my in the light blue shirst come from then, when i had already gotten sun burned and was under 200 pounds. Right now I'm paler and heavy, but I still they way i look in the photo.
By the way, Happy St. Patrick's Day!
